In a high-level meeting held at the President’s Office in Malé, Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of Australia, the Honourable Richard Marles MP, to discuss expanding the scope of cooperation between the Maldives and Australia.

The meeting, which took place on 02nd May 2025, Monday morning, served as an important platform to advance mutual priorities. Both leaders explored opportunities to enhance defence cooperation, particularly in strengthening maritime capabilities and regional security frameworks. This dialogue builds upon ongoing initiatives aimed at reinforcing the Maldives’ capacity to safeguard its territorial waters, including Australia’s recent announcement to gift a Guardian-class Patrol Boat and hydrographic equipment to the Maldives National Defence Force.

Tourism, a central pillar of the Maldivian economy and a sector of growing interest to Australian travellers, was also a key point of discussion. The Vice President and the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the potential for greater collaboration in tourism promotion, with a shared interest in encouraging sustainable tourism development and increasing connectivity between the two nations.
In addition to defence and tourism, both parties underscored their strong commitment to environmental protection and the urgent need to address the challenges posed by climate change. As island and coastal nations vulnerable to rising sea levels and shifting weather patterns, the Maldives and Australia acknowledged the importance of working together to promote climate resilience and support global efforts to reduce environmental risks.

The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their dedication to deepening diplomatic relations and advancing strategic collaboration in areas of mutual interest. This includes continued support for regional peace and stability, enhanced economic cooperation, and joint action on global environmental challenges.
The visit by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles highlights the enduring partnership between Australia and the Maldives, grounded in mutual respect, shared values, and a vision for a peaceful and sustainable Indian Ocean region.
