A new addition to the Maldives’ growing portfolio of tourist resort development sites reflects the government’s sustained focus on expanding investment opportunities in the tourism sector. The Ministry of Tourism has officially announced the inclusion of a 14.28-hectare plot of lagoon from Goidhoo Faru in Baa Atoll for tourism development, opening doors for investors to establish premium resort experiences in one of the Maldives’ most pristine natural environments.
This update comes under the sixth amendment to Announcement No: (IUL)88-PS/88/2024/38, issued in accordance with Regulation Number: R-69/2016, the governing regulation for submitting proposals to lease islands, land, and lagoons for tourism purposes. The newly listed Goidhoo lagoon plot is now part of the designated locations made available for development of uninhabited islands and lagoons into tourist facilities.
Originally published in May last year, the list included 17 locations earmarked for tourism development. With this latest revision, the Ministry has updated the development map by not only adding the Goidhoo plot but also removing two previously listed locations: an 82-hectare lagoon in Kaafu Atoll and the AA. Alikoirah lagoon. Although no official reason was provided for the removal, similar adjustments in the past have followed confirmed lease decisions or shifts in development strategy.
The inclusion of the Goidhoo lagoon underscores the government’s proactive approach to diversify tourism zones and facilitate investment beyond the more densely developed central atolls. Baa Atoll, already recognized for its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and rich marine biodiversity, continues to be a prime location for sustainable resort development.
