Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef met with Ms. Gwen Yamamoto-Lau, Executive Director of the Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority (HGIA), to explore opportunities for sustainable energy financing tailored to the unique needs of island nations. The meeting was part of his official visit to Hawaii, undertaken at the invitation of the Blue Planet Alliance.
Discussions focused on the mutual challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and other island jurisdictions, particularly in mitigating climate risks and advancing renewable energy goals within geographically constrained environments. The Vice President praised Hawaii’s innovative approach to energy transition and expressed particular interest in the HGIA’s model for green finance and infrastructure investment.

The Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority, widely recognized as Hawaii’s state-level green bank, plays a key role in accelerating the state’s journey toward 100% renewable energy. Ms. Yamamoto-Lau provided an in-depth overview of HGIA’s inclusive financing strategies, including on-bill financing programmes that enable households and small businesses to repay the cost of renewable energy installations directly through their electricity bills. This model not only lowers financial barriers for consumers but also ensures broader participation in clean energy adoption.
Vice President Latheef noted that these types of adaptable and community-driven financing mechanisms could offer vital solutions for countries like the Maldives. He emphasized the importance of integrating similar models to expand the country’s renewable energy portfolio while ensuring financial accessibility for remote island communities.
Both parties agreed on the importance of public-private partnerships and the need for flexible financing instruments that respond to the evolving climate and energy landscape in island regions. The Vice President also acknowledged the relevance of Hawaii’s experience as a roadmap for the Maldives, given the shared challenges in energy security, vulnerability to climate change, and the need to shift rapidly to sustainable energy sources.
This engagement further reinforces the Maldives’ active participation in global clean energy conversations and its dedication to adopting innovative financing solutions that align with national sustainability goals. As a country that continues to champion environmental responsibility, the Maldives is committed to working with international partners to ensure that island communities remain resilient, livable, and forward-looking, while continuing to welcome the world to its vibrant shores.
