Scaling up climate resilience and clean energy initiatives, the Maldives has officially joined the Blue Planet Alliance (BPA), following the signing of a non-binding cooperation agreement on Monday, 19 May 2025, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The agreement was formalized during the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme, where His Excellency Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef signed on behalf of the Maldives, with BPA Founder Henk Rogers representing the global sustainability organisation.
The agreement, titled The Blue Planet Climate Agreement, marks a collaborative understanding between the Maldives and the BPA to support the country’s transition to renewable energy. The accord underscores the Maldives’ continued commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and enhancing sustainable development by leveraging international cooperation and technical assistance. The agreement also officially acknowledges the Maldives as a member of the Blue Planet Alliance.
The signing took place during the fourth cohort of the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme, held in Honolulu from 19 to 23 May 2025. The programme brings together a diverse group of global climate advocates, policy experts, utility executives, and civil society organisations, with a special focus on empowering Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in overcoming the complex challenges of implementing renewable energy technologies.
Vice President Latheef is currently on an official visit to Hawaii, having accepted a special invitation from the Blue Planet Alliance to participate in the Fellowship Programme. During the visit, he has been actively engaging in high-level sessions and strategy discussions with international stakeholders. The Maldivian delegation includes senior officials from government ministries, national utility companies, and local civil society organisations, all playing a crucial role in shaping the nation’s climate and energy strategies.
In his address at the Fellowship’s opening ceremony, the Vice President reiterated the Maldives’ climate leadership, highlighting the launch of the country’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Energy Roadmap 2024–2033. The roadmap outlines a national goal to generate 33% of electricity from renewable sources by 2028—a priority initiative under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
The Vice President also emphasized the importance of regional partnerships and knowledge sharing, particularly among island nations that are most vulnerable to climate impacts. He praised the BPA’s efforts in building capacity and mobilizing resources for sustainable energy solutions, calling the alliance a catalyst for practical climate action and long-term energy transformation.
By joining the Blue Planet Alliance, the Maldives strengthens its position as a leading advocate for environmental sustainability and clean energy innovation. The alliance not only offers technical collaboration but also serves as a bridge between island nations and the global climate finance community, enabling the Maldives to access expertise, funding opportunities, and global platforms to advance its climate goals.
