As global attention turns to digital inclusion in celebration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2025, Maldives stands out for its commitment to bridging the digital divide, particularly among women and girls. Under this year’s WTISD theme “Advancing digital gender equality” the country’s leading digital service provider, Dhiraagu, is being recognized for its efforts to create a more inclusive and connected nation.
In a world where over 2.6 billion people remain offline, with women and girls disproportionately affected, digital connectivity has become a critical factor in enabling access to education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Barriers such as affordability, access to infrastructure, and lack of digital skills continue to hinder participation in the digital economy. Recognizing this challenge, Dhiraagu has taken major strides to ensure equitable access to connectivity across all corners of the Maldives.
One of the company’s most impactful achievements is delivering 100% fibre broadband coverage to all inhabited islands, a rare feat even by global benchmarks. This infrastructure ensures that every citizen, including those in the most remote communities, can benefit from fast and reliable internet access. Women and girls in particular are now better equipped to engage in digital learning, access telehealth services, explore remote work opportunities, and grow digital businesses.
Beyond fixed broadband, Dhiraagu’s mobile network coverage spans the entire archipelago, extending high-speed internet access to even the most geographically isolated islands. In 2024, the company’s efforts were recognized internationally when it was named the Fastest 5G Network in the Maldives by global network intelligence firm Ookla. With 5G capabilities, Dhiraagu is enabling innovation in fields such as virtual education, telemedicine, smart agriculture, and tech-enabled women-led enterprises.
Dhiraagu’s role in future-proofing the nation’s digital infrastructure continues through its participation in the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system, which will enhance international connectivity and strengthen the resilience of the Maldives’ digital network. The new undersea cable is expected to increase data capacity, reduce latency, and support the country’s vision of becoming a regionally integrated digital economy.
This year’s WTISD also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, a landmark global policy framework that continues to guide efforts toward gender equality. In this context, Dhiraagu’s inclusive initiatives reflect the broader mission to make technology a vehicle for empowerment and equal opportunity.
By connecting every inhabited island and ensuring that no community is left behind, Dhiraagu is reinforcing its commitment to a Digital Raajje, a smarter, fairer, and more resilient digital society. Its efforts not only support national development but also contribute to global progress in achieving digital equity and sustainable development goals.
