Foreign Minister of the Republic of Maldives, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, is on an official visit to the State of Kuwait, following an invitation extended by Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya. The visit reflects the Maldives’ enduring commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation with key regional partners.

Upon his arrival in Kuwait, Minister Khaleel received a warm welcome from his counterpart, setting the tone for a visit focused on consolidating the deep-rooted relations between the two nations. Built upon mutual respect and a shared Islamic identity, Maldives–Kuwait relations have consistently reflected solidarity and mutual understanding.

A central component of the visit will be high-level talks between the two Foreign Ministers. These discussions are expected to revisit the historic relationship between the Maldives and Kuwait and chart pathways for future cooperation, with particular emphasis on sustainable development and shared economic interests. The agenda includes identifying emerging opportunities that align with the strategic priorities of both countries.

During his stay, Minister Khaleel will also meet with several senior officials from the Kuwaiti government, including the Minister of Commerce and Industry, the Minister for Investment, and the Minister of Finance. These engagements aim to explore avenues to strengthen economic cooperation, particularly in trade and investment by fostering partnerships that can contribute to long-term economic resilience and diversification.

Kuwait has long been a reliable development partner to the Maldives. Notably, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development has supported major infrastructure projects in the Maldives, such as the expansion of Velana International Airport. Most recently, in 2024, Kuwait extended financial assistance through the Fund for the development of Small Island Hospitals a critical initiative aimed at improving healthcare access across the atolls.

This visit highlights the Maldives’ strategic efforts to enhance foreign partnerships that can bring tangible benefits to Maldivian citizens and support national development goals. With a growing focus on boosting economic diplomacy, the Maldives continues to engage with like-minded nations to broaden investment prospects, promote tourism, and diversify cooperation beyond traditional sectors.

Minister Khaleel is accompanied by Joint Secretary Ms. Khadeeja Najeeha and Political Director Ms. Fathimath Nasha Ismail. Their participation reflects the comprehensive and multi-sectoral approach adopted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in reinforcing international partnerships that contribute meaningfully to national progress.

As the Maldives continues to position itself as a vibrant destination for investment and tourism, these diplomatic engagements play a vital role in fostering stable and fruitful international relationships that support both economic growth and cultural understanding.
