Tourists heading to the Maldives will soon have a new gateway to explore the serene beauty of Meemu Atoll, as Muli Airport is scheduled to commence commercial flight operations on 15 May 2025. This milestone follows the successful completion of all technical assessments and final preparations, with the official inauguration to be conducted by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) has confirmed that commercial airlines have been formally notified about the opening, including national carrier Maldivian, Villa Air, and Manta Air. As of now, Maldivian has expressed keen interest in beginning scheduled operations to Muli Airport, with discussions currently underway to commence flights as early as 17 May 2025. Ticket bookings are expected to open shortly after flight schedules are finalized.
Located in Muli, the capital island of Meemu Atoll, the new domestic airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity and support the growth of tourism in the central atolls of the Maldives. The airport project involved extensive reclamation work, covering an area of 36 hectares, and the construction of a 1,500-metre runway, suitable for accommodating various types of domestic aircraft.
With an investment exceeding USD 19.46 million, the development of Muli Airport has introduced modern infrastructure and facilities tailored to domestic aviation standards. The airport is expected to operate with an initial staff of approximately 40 personnel, contributing to local employment and economic development.
A successful test flight was conducted on 25 April 2025, marking the final stage of technical verification. The project is seen as a key component in strengthening the country’s internal transport network and offering a more seamless travel experience for both local and international tourists eager to explore the pristine islands of Meemu Atoll.
The upcoming launch of flight operations at Muli Airport reflects the Maldives’ continuing efforts to improve accessibility across its island chain, enriching the tourism experience with more direct and convenient domestic travel options.
