Sportfishing enthusiasts from around the world have turned their attention to the Maldives following the successful conclusion of the BurunuBoma Global Sportfishing Tournament 2025, the largest international event of its kind ever held in the island nation. Organised by the Visit Maldives Club (VMC) in collaboration with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the tournament took place from 2nd to 4th May and marked a major milestone in promoting the country as a top-tier destination for sportfishing.

Nine competitive teams took part in the inaugural tournament, including one international contender, Team Dubai. This first edition set a new standard for sportfishing in the Maldives, combining competition with conservation through adherence to International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules and catch-and-release practices. A central aim of the tournament was to strengthen the Maldives’ emerging sportfishing industry, providing opportunities for local anglers to gain international exposure and experience.

One of the most talked-about moments of the tournament was the Marlin Show held in Malé City, which featured a massive Blue Marlin that had died during the catch. The rare sight attracted significant public interest, highlighting both the thrill and the respect for marine life that sportfishing demands. Throughout the three-day event, an active leaderboard kept participants and spectators engaged, fuelling excitement and competition right until the end.

Guidance and expertise were provided by Robert “Fly” Navarro, the Global Ambassador of Maldives for Sportfishing, who is currently in the country. His presence and leadership contributed to the smooth coordination of the tournament, and all teams expressed high levels of satisfaction with the overall experience and ethical fishing practices followed throughout the event.

The grand finale was celebrated on 6th May with a boat show and awards ceremony held at Farukolhufushi. The Champion Team title was awarded to Team Dubai, while individual accolades were presented for Best Captain, Best Angler, Best Mate, and Best Video. The ceremony capped off a festive and professionally run tournament that drew praise from all corners of the global sportfishing community.

Visit Maldives Club and MMPRC extended their deepest appreciation to all who made the event a success, including the teams, judges, organisers, and numerous supporters. Special thanks were given to the event’s key sponsors: Dhiraagu (Digital Partner), Bidhabin (Event Management Partner), and the Housing Development Corporation (Venue Partner). Other contributors such as Shop and Go, Banoon, Kandu Falhu Fishing, Lotus Fihaara, Elite Fishing, and Dhiguveli Maldives also received recognition for their essential support.

Building on the success and positive global response, preparations are already underway for the next edition of the BurunuBoma Global Sportfishing Tournament, with expectations of more than doubling the number of participating teams. Full details will be announced in the coming months, promising even more excitement for sportfishing fans and travel adventurers alike.
