The historic event took place in the pristine waters near Fulhadhoo Island in Baa Atoll, where twenty participants submerged beneath the surface to attend the panel, with five key speakers delivering their remarks entirely underwater. Each panelist spoke for more than two minutes using specially designed scuba communication equipment, fulfilling the criteria required by Guinness World Records to certify the achievement.

The distinguished panel included Ahmed Shiyam, Maldives’ Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources; Khalid Al Hamadi, Chief Executive Officer of Ooredoo Maldives; Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF); Shabeen Ali, Operations Director at Ooredoo Maldives; and Afsheen Mohamed, Senior Manager of Transmission at Ooredoo Maldives. Their discussions revolved around the power of innovation, the role of digital transformation in island nations, and the critical connection between technology and sustainability.

Ooredoo Maldives emphasized that the initiative was not only a display of technical capability but also a symbol of their continued dedication to pushing the boundaries of possibility in the telecommunications sector. CEO Khalid Al Hamadi remarked that the event was a testament to the limitless potential of innovation when combined with bold vision and collaborative effort. “We are proud to have hosted the World’s Largest Underwater Panel Discussion. This demonstrates that imagination, when paired with technology and courage, can lead to extraordinary accomplishments,” he said.

Ooredoo’s latest milestone adds to a long track record of firsts in the Maldives. The company has been instrumental in transforming the digital landscape of the nation, being the first to launch 3G, 4G, and 5G networks across the country. These advancements have enabled improved access to education, healthcare, remote work, and global communication, essential pillars for any thriving island nation.

This innovative underwater event, branded under the theme #BelowTheSurface, not only brought global attention to the Maldives as a hub of creativity and forward thinking but also served as a unique promotional platform showcasing the natural beauty of the Maldivian marine environment to the world. For visitors and investors alike, it presents the Maldives as more than a scenic destination, it is also a place where innovation and ambition flourish.

With this newly minted world record, Ooredoo Maldives has once again proven its role as a transformative force in the region, bridging technology with experience, and setting an inspiring precedent for how corporations can creatively engage both local and global audiences.
