The Maldives has officially launched ‘Tradian’, a comprehensive digital gateway designed to streamline the nation’s import and export processes, marking a key development in the country’s efforts to modernize its trade ecosystem. The platform, now fully operational, provides a unified online portal where businesses can manage all trade-related documentation and procedures, simplifying transactions and increasing efficiency across the sector.
First introduced in September last year, Tradian is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader digitalisation initiative aimed at strengthening infrastructure and supporting economic growth. The platform was approved during a cabinet meeting held on 2 February, with a soft launch initially scheduled for 20 April. Full implementation is now in effect, and from 1 June onward, all import and export transactions in the Maldives must be processed exclusively through Tradian.
Designed with input from industry experts and private sector stakeholders, the system reflects the practical needs of businesses operating in international trade. It eliminates multiple administrative steps by offering a centralised online interface, thereby reducing paperwork and delays traditionally associated with trade logistics.
To ease the transition, the Maldives Customs Service and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) have begun migrating key services to Tradian. These include the registration of foreign-going vessels, submission of cargo manifests, vessel arrival and departure details (ETA/ETD), as well as the registration of shipping agents and freight forwarders. Customs authorities have announced that businesses will be allowed to continue using existing systems until 31 May 2025, providing a grace period to complete the onboarding process.
The platform is managed by TradeNet Maldives Corporation Ltd., the national body spearheading digital trade initiatives. Government representatives noted that Tradian is not only expected to improve operational efficiency but also boost transparency and reliability in the trade sector, ultimately making it easier for local enterprises to participate in global commerce.
For foreign investors and business travelers, this digital shift highlights the Maldives’ growing commitment to creating a technology-friendly and globally connected trade environment. As more services integrate into Tradian, the Maldives positions itself as an increasingly attractive hub for seamless commercial activity in the Indian Ocean region.
