His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Islamic Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, met with Professor Osman Bakar, Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), during his official visit to Malaysia. The meeting reaffirmed the enduring partnership between the Maldives and one of the leading Islamic universities in the region.

During the discussions, Minister Dr. Shaheem conveyed his deep appreciation for IIUM’s longstanding support in promoting Islamic education and strengthening intellectual ties with the Maldives. He acknowledged the university’s influential role in nurturing Islamic scholarship and character development, and praised the achievements of Maldivian alumni who have contributed significantly to the nation’s religious, educational, and civic sectors.
Highlighting IIUM’s model of academic excellence rooted in Islamic values, Minister Dr. Shaheem emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to empower the next generation of scholars, leaders, and educators. He noted that many Maldivian graduates from IIUM now serve in important roles across government institutions, religious bodies, and academic centers in the Maldives, enriching both national progress and the preservation of Islamic principles.
The meeting also explored new avenues for cooperation between the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and IIUM. Areas of discussion included expanding academic exchanges, facilitating joint research initiatives, and launching capacity-building programs designed to enhance the professional and spiritual development of Islamic scholars in the Maldives.
Both parties expressed optimism that closer collaboration would provide additional opportunities for Maldivian students aspiring to pursue higher education while strengthening cultural and educational ties between the Maldives and Malaysia.
