His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu witnessed the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Exchanges of Notes (EoNs) between the Republic of Maldives and Malaysia during his ongoing official visit, marking a new phase of enhanced collaboration across multiple sectors.

The formal ceremony highlighted the strong and expanding partnership between the two nations, with agreements signed in the areas of sports, health, tourism, and diplomatic training.

The Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Sports was signed by His Excellency Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, and Her Excellency Puan Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Youth and Sports of Malaysia. The agreement seeks to strengthen ties between sporting organisations, promote athlete and official training, support sports medicine and rehabilitation efforts, develop sporting facilities, and foster cooperation in areas such as anti-doping measures.

In the health sector, His Excellency Dr Abdulla Khaleel and His Excellency Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Minister of Health of Malaysia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at advancing collaboration in human resource development, strengthening health service delivery systems, encouraging health tourism, and enhancing the development of health information technology between the two countries.

Tourism cooperation was also a focus of the exchanges. Her Excellency Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed, High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia, and His Excellency Tuan Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Malaysia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on tourism collaboration. This agreement aims to promote mutual tourism opportunities, develop Muslim-friendly tourism products, strengthen community-based and eco-tourism initiatives, and foster the development of cultural resources as tourism assets.

Further strengthening diplomatic relations, the Exchange of Notes on the training of diplomats was carried out between Her Excellency Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed and His Excellency Mohamed Alamin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia. This cooperation will link the Foreign Service Institute of Maldives and Malaysia’s Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, providing opportunities for professional development and deeper engagement between the two diplomatic services.

Additionally, an Exchange of Notes on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultation was signed between the two foreign ministries, formalising a mechanism for regular consultations. This aims to enhance political, economic, social, and other areas of cooperation, and promote coordination on regional and international issues within the framework of the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.

The agreements signed during President Dr Muizzu’s visit are expected to further deepen the already strong Maldives–Malaysia partnership, creating new opportunities for growth, knowledge-sharing, and mutual prosperity. As the Maldives continues to expand its global connections, these agreements signal the country’s commitment to building meaningful and lasting international relationships, fostering growth not only in diplomacy but also in tourism, health, and cultural exchange.
