During his official visit to Malaysia, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with His Excellency Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday, 28th April 2025, in Putrajaya for formal bilateral talks that reaffirmed the strong ties between the Maldives and Malaysia. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across strategic sectors and creating new pathways for mutual development.
The official talks were held at Putra Perdana, the Prime Minister’s Office, where President Dr Muizzu was warmly welcomed. In his opening remarks, President Dr Muizzu expressed deep gratitude for the invitation, the generous hospitality extended to the Maldivian delegation, and the longstanding friendship shared by the two nations. He emphasized the need to maintain positive momentum in bilateral cooperation to ensure sustainable growth and long-term partnership.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged the key areas identified by the Maldivian President, affirming Malaysia’s commitment to exploring new initiatives that would further strengthen ties. He noted that the upcoming Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the visit would contribute to enhancing collaboration across sectors such as health, tourism, sports, financial services, and diplomatic training.

A notable highlight of the discussions was the flexibility Malaysia offers Maldivian citizens through its visa arrangements. President Dr Muizzu expressed his appreciation for this facilitation, noting its importance for educational, professional, and tourism ties. He also underlined the Maldives’ ambitions in digital transformation and expressed interest in bringing Malaysian expertise in Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity to support the Maldives’ growing digital economy.
Following the official talks, President Dr Muizzu witnessed the Exchange of several MoUs and Exchange of Notes, formalizing cooperation in key fields. During the joint press statement, President Dr Muizzu reflected on the Maldives–Malaysia diplomatic relationship, which spans over 57 years, highlighting Malaysia’s pivotal role in the development of Maldivian civil service through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme. Over 600 Maldivians have benefited from higher education opportunities in Malaysia under this initiative, a fact that stands as a symbol of the enduring ties between the two countries.
Expanding the scope of the discussions, President Dr Muizzu conveyed his administration’s aspirations to deepen cooperation not only in traditional sectors but also in areas vital for future growth, such as defence, advanced technologies, and cybersecurity. Economic collaboration was another major focus, with the President expressing the Maldives’ readiness to provide Malaysian investors with comprehensive information about opportunities in the country’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs), the digital economy, maritime sectors, and financial services.

In recognition of Malaysia’s support and friendship, President Dr Muizzu extended an invitation to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to participate in the upcoming Maldivian Investment Forum, aimed at promoting investment opportunities in the Maldives to international partners. He also invited Prime Minister Ibrahim for an official visit to the Maldives, further strengthening the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect between the two nations.
Environmental sustainability and climate resilience were also discussed, with President Dr Muizzu emphasizing the Maldives’ commitment to protecting its natural environment, a key issue shared by both island and coastal nations.
