Visitors to the Maldives can look forward to even more exceptional experiences as the country prepares to add 1,290 new tourism beds this year, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s leading travel destinations. The initiative reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening and diversifying the Maldives’ dynamic tourism sector, the largest pillar of the national economy.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim shared the latest updates on the country’s tourism development efforts. He highlighted that 65 of the resorts currently operating are proudly owned and managed by Maldivian brands, while 110 resorts are operated by internationally renowned hospitality groups. This blend of local and international expertise continues to enrich the visitor experience across the islands.
The Minister revealed that construction activities are progressing at 156 resort sites across the Maldives, opening new opportunities for future visitors. He acknowledged that work at 61 of these sites has temporarily halted, but affirmed that the Government is actively exploring solutions to facilitate the completion of these projects, ensuring the continued expansion of high-quality accommodations across the archipelago.
In addition to overseeing ongoing projects, the Government has made strides in the strategic allocation of new tourism properties. Ten resort sites have been awarded through closed bidding processes, three through innovative cross-subsidy models aimed at community development, and another three through open bidding. These initiatives are designed to support not only economic growth but also broader national development goals.
Minister Thoriq emphasized that the Maldives’ tourism strategy is rooted in creating a resilient and diversified sector. The focus remains on introducing a wider variety of tourism experiences, which will enable the Maldives to offer richer, more sustainable options for visitors while securing long-term prosperity for local communities.
With these developments underway, travelers can anticipate an even greater array of luxurious resorts, vibrant cultural experiences, and untouched natural beauty that have made the Maldives a favorite destination for discerning tourists around the globe.
