Velassaru Maldives recently celebrated a rare and heartwarming milestone as Dr. Gerhard Klein and his wife, Corina, marked their 50th visit to the luxury island resort. The couple, hailing from Lucerne, Switzerland, first discovered their slice of paradise in 1991. Over the past 34 years, they have returned again and again, sometimes even twice a year, drawn by the serenity, personal connection, and rejuvenation they find here. What began as a getaway has evolved into an enduring tradition and a second home.

Dr. Klein, a General Practitioner back home, describes Velassaru as his personal retreat, a place where the roles are reversed and he is the one receiving care. “In Switzerland, my role is to take care of people. But here, I am the one being looked after,” he shared. “It’s the one place where I can truly recharge.” This year’s golden milestone visit was met with a warm Maldivian welcome at the airport, thoughtful mementos including a sun hat and golf shirt bearing special Dhivehi inscriptions, and a personal golf buggy to navigate the island in comfort.

Daily routines at Velassaru have become sacred rituals for the Kleins. Mornings begin with tranquil snorkelling in the lagoon’s clear waters or peaceful strolls around the island’s lush perimeter. While earlier visits were filled with day-long diving adventures, Dr. Klein now embraces a more relaxed pace. Afternoons are for indulging in beloved Maldivian cuisine, and evenings bring the familiar comfort of sunset drinks at Chill Bar, where a Schweppes tonic and a cigar await him. The staff, he notes with admiration, even remember the smallest details, from his favourite juice to his preferred style of espresso.

Dr. Klein credits much of the resort’s continued excellence to the leadership of General Manager Denys Hordiienko, whose presence and commitment ensure a smooth and memorable guest experience. “It’s the little things that make a difference. Everyone knows your name. The food at every restaurant is exceptional. And there’s always this beautiful sense of being home,” he said.

For those unfamiliar with Velassaru, Dr. Klein offers simple praise: “It’s the most beautiful place in the world.” More than a luxury retreat, it has become a sanctuary where he and Corina reconnect, reflect, and create lifelong memories. As their 50th visit comes to a close, one thing is certain, they’ll be back again, continuing a tradition woven with love, rest, and a deep connection to the Maldives.
