To expand the Maldives’ international economic footprint, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has departed on an official visit to Türkiye to foster deeper trade relations and explore new avenues for investment. The three-day visit, led by Minister Saeed and senior officials from the Ministry, is expected to reinforce economic collaboration and open new opportunities for Maldivian businesses in one of the region’s most strategically connected markets.
During the visit, Minister Saeed is scheduled to engage in high-level meetings with Turkish business leaders and international investors, with discussions centered on enhancing trade exchanges and encouraging investment inflows into the Maldives. This visit aligns with the administration’s commitment to revitalizing international trade partnerships, particularly under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, whose first official state visit was to Türkiye shortly after taking office in November 2023.
Over the past year, diplomatic and economic cooperation between the Maldives and Türkiye has seen notable progress. A key milestone in this growing partnership was the signing of a Preferential Trade Agreement aimed at reducing trade barriers and facilitating the flow of goods between the two countries. For Maldivian exporters, particularly in the fisheries sector, the agreement presents expanded access to Turkish markets, while Maldivian consumers stand to benefit from a broader selection of Turkish products at more competitive prices.
Beyond trade, the Maldives and Türkiye have also made significant strides in strengthening their strategic cooperation. The Maldives established its first-ever embassy in Ankara, reflecting the increasing importance of bilateral ties. Additionally, Türkiye continues to support the Maldives in enhancing its national defense capabilities, including the provision of unmanned aerial vehicles to bolster the Maldives National Defence Force’s air surveillance capacity. Further reinforcing maritime security, Türkiye is set to donate a Dogan-class fast attack craft, the TCG Volkan (P-343), to the Maldives.
