In a gesture reflecting the close and enduring partnership between the Maldives and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today conferred the Order of the Dignified Rule of Muleege Dynasty (O.D.R.M.D) upon His Excellency Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Murshid, Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD). The award ceremony was held at the President’s Office and marked a moment of recognition for the SFD’s extensive contributions to the Maldives’ development journey.

This prestigious national honour is granted under the authority of Article 115 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Section 3 of Law No. 1/97. It commemorates the legacy of Al-Sultan Muhammed Shamsuddin, a revered ruler in Maldivian history whose reign witnessed transformative governance milestones, including the adoption of the country’s first written constitution in 1933.

President Dr Muizzu awarded the honour in recognition of Mr. Al-Murshid’s leadership and dedication in advancing Saudi-funded development efforts across the Maldives. Under his stewardship, the Saudi Fund for Development has played a vital role in supporting projects that have improved the quality of life for Maldivians and expanded the nation’s capacity for economic and social progress.

Since its establishment in 1974, the SFD has remained a key development partner for many nations, and in the Maldives, its impact is visible across multiple sectors. The Fund has committed more than USD 470 million in concessional loans and grants to support critical infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and fisheries. This ongoing support has not only enhanced national resilience but also elevated the Maldives’ ability to deliver better services to its citizens and visitors alike.

A notable highlight of this partnership came in May 2024, when the SFD approved USD 150 million for two major initiatives. Of this, USD 100 million was allocated to expand Velana International Airport, an essential gateway to the Maldives that welcomes millions of tourists annually. The airport’s expansion aims to strengthen air connectivity, improve travel experience, and support the growing tourism industry that is the backbone of the Maldivian economy. The remaining USD 50 million was earmarked for healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of three modern hospitals to improve access to medical services across the islands.

Mr. Al-Murshid’s current visit, which began on 13 April 2025, stands as a testament to the strong ties between the two nations and the shared commitment to sustainable, inclusive development. His leadership at the helm of the SFD continues to support long-term progress in the Maldives, contributing to the country’s aspirations as a world-class destination and a thriving, resilient nation.
