The Maldives has taken a promising step forward in boosting its athletic training capabilities through a new partnership with the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. As part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, this collaboration will offer Maldivian athletes access to world-class training facilities and expert guidance in key areas of sports development.
Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, during his recent official visit to the UK, highlighted the potential of this partnership to elevate the standards of sports in the Maldives. He noted that this initiative will not only focus on training elite athletes but will also provide technical support in crucial disciplines such as sports medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition, and psychology.
While in the UK, Minister Rafiu held high-level discussions with officials from the University of Leeds, a globally recognized institution known for its excellence in sports science and athlete development. The Minister also met with the Mayor of Leeds and the Mayor of West Yorkshire, accompanied by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Both mayors pledged their support in creating pathways for Maldivian athletes to benefit from Leeds’ sporting ecosystem.
“Leeds is home to some of the UK’s top swimmers and track athletes, many of whom have excelled at international levels, including the Olympics,” Minister Rafiu said. “This makes it a valuable environment for our athletes to grow and train.”
The discussions further explored long-term opportunities for Maldivians to pursue academic and practical training in coaching, sports science, and performance conditioning through the University of Leeds. With plans to engage relevant sports associations in the Maldives, the Ministry is optimistic about translating these opportunities into real benefits for the country’s sports community.
This partnership marks an exciting chapter in the Maldives’ commitment to athletic excellence and international cooperation, reinforcing the nation’s ambition to nurture globally competitive athletes while continuing to grow as an attractive destination for sports tourism and cultural exchange.
