The Maldives has once again marked its presence on the international stage, with three members of its Parliament elected to influential committees within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). This recognition came during the 150th IPU Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 2025 April 5 to 9, where global lawmakers gathered to discuss common legislative priorities and cooperation among member nations.

Representing the Maldives in key roles, Member of Parliament for Huraa, Dr Anara Naeem, secured a position in the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to gender equality in political representation. Mohamed Ali, representing Gadhdhoo Constituency, was selected to serve in the Working Group on Science and Technology, reflecting the Maldives’ interest in fostering global scientific cooperation and innovation. Additionally, MP for Nilandhoo, Fathimath Saudha, earned a place in the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, a vital forum for global conflict resolution and security-related policy discussion.

These appointments were made under the Asia-Pacific Group, of which the Maldives is a longstanding member. The selections not only highlight the growing recognition of the Maldives’ parliamentary diplomacy but also underscore its active participation in fostering international dialogue and collaboration through the IPU.

The Maldivian delegation to the Assembly comprised six parliamentarians, including Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla. Other attendees included Minority Leader Ibrahim Nazil (MP for Hithadhoo South), Asma Rasheed (Central Maafannu), Abdulla Rifau (Maafannu South), and Hussain Imran Latheef (Henveiru South), along with Anara, Mohamed Ali, and Saudha.

Since joining the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 2005, the Maldives has increasingly played a role in its committees and working groups. The IPU, founded in 1889, brings together national parliaments from across the globe to promote democratic governance, accountability, and cooperation among its members. The participation and success of Maldivian parliamentarians in such a globally respected body reflect the country’s growing footprint in international affairs and its commitment to fostering global partnerships rooted in shared legislative and democratic values.
