To strengthen international partnerships, the Maldives and Malta have reaffirmed their shared commitment to collaborative progress during an official visit by the Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, to Valletta on 7 April 2025. During his visit, Dr Khaleel met with Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Dr Ian Borg, to discuss advancing mutual interests between the two island nations.
Both countries emphasized the natural affinity they share as small island states, particularly in their values and development priorities. The meeting served to revive and enhance longstanding diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Malta, with both governments expressing their intent to strengthen cooperation in key areas that impact the lives of their citizens and contribute to global progress.
Tourism emerged as a vital point of discussion, with both sides recognizing its role in creating cultural exchange, boosting economic resilience, and enhancing people-to-people connectivity. As nations with flourishing tourism sectors, the Maldives and Malta aim to share best practices and explore innovative collaborations that can enrich their respective travel experiences. Such exchanges can open new avenues for tourism investment and sustainable destination management.
Environmental preservation was another area of shared interest, reflecting both countries’ dedication to addressing climate change and promoting green energy solutions. With their vulnerable ecosystems, the Maldives and Malta reinforced their ongoing efforts to champion renewable energy, coastal protection, and climate action on the international stage.

The talks also touched on diversifying economic ties through trade and investment opportunities. Both governments noted the importance of fostering more inclusive economic cooperation and creating a platform for private sector engagement. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of education as a long-term investment in bilateral relations, exploring possibilities for student and faculty exchange programmes, research collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives.
Dr Khaleel was accompanied by senior officials, including Ambassador Dr Hala Hameed and Hassan Hussain Shihaab, in a series of meetings with Maltese dignitaries and institutions aimed at exploring practical avenues for cooperation. The visit reflected a mutual interest in building a stronger partnership that is beneficial, enduring, and responsive to the needs of both countries.
The renewed momentum in Maldives-Malta relations not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also opens doors for travellers seeking meaningful experiences in two of the world’s most enchanting island destinations. As both nations continue to work together on shared challenges and common goals, the partnership promises to offer new opportunities for tourism, cultural understanding, and sustainable growth.
