His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the University of Leeds during his official trip to the United Kingdom, highlighting a personal and professional connection to one of the UK’s most respected academic institutions. The visit focused on fostering academic collaboration between the Maldives and the University of Leeds, reflecting the President’s ongoing commitment to strengthening international partnerships in education and research.
The President was welcomed by UK Member of Parliament Alex Sobel and Professor Hai-Sui Yu, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university. Discussions centred around the potential for joint academic initiatives, capacity-building programmes, and knowledge exchange that could benefit Maldivian institutions and students in the years ahead.
President Dr Muizzu, an accomplished civil engineer, completed his PhD at the University of Leeds in 2009. His return to the university served not only as a nostalgic homecoming but also as an opportunity to establish meaningful academic ties between the Maldives and his alma mater. The visit reinforced the importance of leveraging alumni relationships to create lasting institutional links that support national development goals.
Founded in 1904, the University of Leeds is consistently ranked among the top universities in the United Kingdom, known for its robust research output, international outlook, and dedication to academic excellence. It maintains strong global partnerships and is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities.
This engagement with the University of Leeds adds another dimension to President Dr Muizzu’s broader visit to the UK, which includes tourism promotion activities, community engagement, and strategic meetings. It also reflects the Maldives’ focus on enhancing its human capital by building bridges with globally recognized institutions.
