The Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing healthcare quality and patient safety by taking part in a prominent international summit held in Manila, Philippines. Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim represented the Maldives at the 7th Global Ministerial Summit for Patient Safety, hosted by the Philippine Department of Health from April 3 to 4, 2025. This annual event gathers senior health leaders, policy-makers, and global experts to exchange ideas, assess progress, and strengthen collaborative efforts in the area of patient safety.
The summit served as a key platform for evaluating the progress of the Global Patient Safety Action Plan (GPSAP) 2021–2030, a roadmap adopted by countries worldwide to reduce avoidable harm in healthcare settings. Delegates reviewed achievements, identified persistent challenges, and shared innovative approaches to improve safety standards for patients across diverse health systems.
On the sidelines of the summit, Minister Nazim engaged with international health organisations and global partners to explore strategic partnerships and expand technical cooperation in patient safety. These discussions focused on shared goals, including enhancing institutional capacity, promoting safe clinical practices, and developing long-term policies for sustainable healthcare improvements.
The Maldives has made notable progress in recent years by implementing several key initiatives aligned with global patient safety goals. These include the nationwide launch of the National Patient Safety Programme, which emphasizes accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery. Quality Improvement and Development (QID) units have also been established in hospitals across the country to oversee safety and quality standards. Furthermore, the appointment of dedicated patient safety focal points in 178 health facilities ensures that safety protocols are consistently monitored and strengthened at the local level.
With its participation in the summit, the Maldives continues to demonstrate its commitment to delivering safer and more reliable healthcare services. The country’s active role in global health forums underscores its dedication not only to improving its own health systems but also to contributing meaningfully to international efforts aimed at reducing risks and safeguarding patients around the world.
