Zakariyya Mahmood, originally from N. Kendhikulhudhoo, began his journey on the island in 1982—three years before the resort officially opened. Starting as a labourer, he played a vital role in building the resort and later became a key figure in the Engineering department. Now the Crew Leader for Plant Maintenance, Zakariyya reflects proudly on his 43 years of service: “This island is more than my workplace, it’s my home. Watching it grow over the years and helping train the next generation has been the highlight of my life.”
Similarly, Mohamed Hashim affectionately known as Modey, left his home island of HA. Molhadhoo at just 17 years old to pursue a future at Kandooma. Beginning as a gardener in 1986, he embraced every role that came his way, from Bar Attendant to Speedboat Crew, before eventually rising to Housekeeping Manager. Twice recognised as ‘Manager of the Year’, Modey credits the resort with transforming his life. “Kandooma has given me the opportunity to grow into who I am today,” he said. “The key is to stay passionate and welcome every challenge.”
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Zakariyya, Modey, and five other long-serving team members will be honoured at the Grand Gala Dinner. In addition, 40 team members who have served the island for over two decades will plant 40 coconut palms in their names, a lasting tribute to their loyalty and a reflection of the resort’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Adding a meaningful touch to the occasion, the resort will also create an Underwater Time Capsule, a waterproof container filled with messages, guest wishes, and memorabilia, to be sealed and placed at a dive site.
