The Maldivian government is introducing new regulations to address delays in resort reopenings, a move aimed at bolstering the tourism industry’s growth and sustainability. Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has announced amendments to the Tourism Act that will enforce a structured timeframe for resort closures related to redevelopment. These changes are designed to ensure that properties resume operations within a set period, fostering a more efficient and competitive tourism sector.
In a recent statement, the Minister explained that resorts undergoing redevelopment or temporary closure for other reasons must obtain approval from the Ministry of Tourism and adhere to a predefined reopening schedule. The revised lease agreements will now include these provisions, allowing the government to take necessary action including lease termination if resorts fail to reopen within the stipulated timeframe. Furthermore, the state will not be obligated to compensate leaseholders in cases where agreements are terminated due to non-compliance.
Highlighting the significance of these amendments, the Minister emphasized that timely reopening are essential to maintaining the Maldives’ reputation as a premier travel destination. By ensuring that resorts remain operational and accessible to tourists, these measures will help sustain visitor influx and industry revenue.
In addition to regulatory changes, the government is working to strengthen financial support for the tourism sector through the establishment of a Tourism Trust Fund. The fund will be developed over the next three months, with its operations guided by specific regulations. The initiative aims to provide financial assistance for industry development while also supporting social welfare programs linked to tourism.
Funding for the Trust Fund will come from multiple sources, including sponsorships of tourism-related activities organized by the Ministry, voluntary contributions from tourism operators as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts, and returns on investments made through the fund. These resources will be directed toward strategic initiatives such as industry training programs, workforce development, and skill enhancement opportunities for tourism professionals.
The fund will be managed by a dedicated board, with clear governance regulations to ensure transparency and accountability. The Minister highlighted that this initiative would play a crucial role in strengthening the tourism industry while also making a broader contribution to social development.
With these policy enhancements, the Maldives aims to reinforce its standing as a world-class travel destination by ensuring the timely operation of resorts and fostering long-term growth in the tourism sector.
