The Maldives has received a generous donation of agricultural equipment from China, valued at MVR 213,000 (CNY 100,000 / USD 14,000), aimed at enhancing the country’s farming capabilities and pest control efforts.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, this donation follows an agreement signed last year with the Sichuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The gifted equipment, which has now arrived in the Maldives, includes 25 tree sprayers, 100 soil fertility test kits, 35 automatic sprinkler controllers, and 340 avian influenza test kits.

The ministry highlighted that these tools will play a crucial role in addressing the growing concerns regarding tree pest infestations, an issue that has seen a significant rise in reports to the ministry. While pest control officially falls under the responsibility of island councils, many local councils lack the necessary resources to effectively manage the problem. To bridge this gap, the donated equipment will be distributed across atoll and city councils to strengthen pest control efforts and agricultural productivity.

This initiative marks another milestone in the collaborative efforts between the Maldives and China, reinforcing the strong partnership between the two nations in advancing sustainable agricultural development.
