The Maldives has taken a significant step in enhancing its appeal as a world-class diving destination with the unveiling of the Kudagiri Dhoonier Wreck, a new underwater attraction featuring two submerged aircraft. This unique dive site, situated in the lagoon of Kudagiri Picnic Island, was created by submerging two Dornier 228 aircraft from the former Air Maldives fleet, marking an innovative blend of history and marine conservation.
Developed through a collaborative effort between the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), this project aligns with the Maldivian government’s broader vision to enhance tourism offerings in the island nation. The initiative not only pays tribute to the country’s aviation heritage but also enriches the diving experiences available to visitors.
The Dornier aircraft, which were once part of Air Maldives, the nation’s first flag carrier that ceased operations in 2000, now rest beneath the turquoise waters, providing an extraordinary exploration site for divers. The name Dhoonier is a creative fusion of the Dhivehi word “Dhooni”, meaning bird, and Dornier, the aircraft’s original manufacturer, symbolizing the pioneering role these planes played in shaping the country’s aviation industry.
In addition to offering an exciting dive attraction, the site will serve as a marine conservation project, with HDC overseeing coral planting efforts to encourage the formation of an artificial reef. This initiative will enhance the marine ecosystem, making the site a haven for diverse marine life while boosting its appeal among adventure-seeking tourists and nature enthusiasts.
The launch event was attended by key officials, including Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, HDC’s Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, and senior representatives from Ooredoo Maldives, highlighting the significance of this development in promoting sustainable tourism.
As part of the government’s continued commitment to strengthening the tourism sector, efforts such as the Kudagiri Dhoonier Wreck aim to reinforce the Maldives’ position as a premier travel destination. With an ambitious target of welcoming 2.3 million visitors this year, initiatives like these showcase the country’s dedication to innovation, conservation, and world-class tourism experiences.
