The Maldives welcomed another wave of international tourists as the luxury cruise liner MS Zuiderdam docked near Malé City on March 9, 2025, carrying a total of 2,025 people, including 1,274 tourists and 751 crew members. The arrival of the vessel, which set sail from Colombo, Sri Lanka, underscores the growing presence of cruise tourism in the island nation.

Maldives Immigration confirmed in a post on X that its Seaport Division officers had efficiently completed the clearance process for all passengers and crew members. The immigration team had been conducting en-route clearance for the MS Zuiderdam from 2025 March 7 to 9, ensuring a smooth arrival for the ship and its travelers.

This marks the second cruise liner to visit the Maldives in 2025, following the arrival of the first cruise ship in January, which carried 632 people, including 216 passengers and 416 crew members, after departing from the Seychelles. The steady increase in cruise ship visits reflects the Maldives’ rising appeal as a premier stop for international cruise lines.

The trend was already evident in late 2024, when two major international cruise ships visited Maldivian waters, bringing a combined total of 4,658 passengers and crew members. With cruise tourism gaining momentum, the Maldivian government has unveiled plans to develop dedicated cruise jetties in three strategic regions, aiming to bolster port infrastructure and provide a seamless experience for international travelers arriving by sea.

As the Maldives continues to attract more cruise liners, industry experts anticipate a positive economic impact on local businesses, tour operators, and the tourism sector at large. The government’s initiative to improve maritime facilities is expected to enhance the country’s reputation as a world-class cruise destination, offering visitors unparalleled access to its picturesque islands and vibrant marine life.
