The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), in collaboration with Dhiraagu, SparkHub LLP, PSM, BCC, MOTE, and NCIT, has officially launched the highly anticipated Visit Maldives Hackathon, an initiative aimed at fostering innovative, technology-driven solutions for the country’s tourism sector. The launch event took place on February 27, 2025, at Dhiraagu Head Office, officiated by Honourable Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim.
Open to both local and international participants aged 18 and above, the 48-hour hackathon is designed to tackle key challenges within the Maldivian tourism industry, particularly by integrating cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices. This initiative aligns with Visit Maldives’ ongoing commitment to enhancing visitor experiences while driving the industry towards greater environmental and operational efficiency.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend information sessions scheduled for March 13th, March 19th, and April 7th before submitting their proposals by 11th April 2025. Following an evaluation process on 12th April 2025, the selected proposals will be announced on April 13th, with the hackathon set to take place from 18th to 20th April, 2025.
During the official launch of the Visit Maldives Hackathon, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim underscored the event’s potential to drive meaningful change in the tourism sector. He emphasized that the innovations emerging from this platform will extend beyond the event itself, influencing the way the Maldives welcomes visitors, manages tourism operations, and safeguards its natural environment while enhancing guest experiences.
MMPRC’s CEO & Managing Director, Ibrahim Shiuree, expressed confidence in the initiative’s impact, highlighting that collaborative efforts and innovative solutions generated through the hackathon could contribute to a stronger and more diverse tourism industry in the Maldives. He noted that this initiative represents a significant step towards integrating technology-driven solutions into the sector to address key challenges.
MMPRC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the Maldives tourism industry throughout 2025, with a range of strategic initiatives in place to support sustainable growth. The corporation emphasized its dedication to fostering innovation, strengthening public-private partnerships, and enhancing global promotion through initiatives like the Visit Maldives Hackathon, which serve as a catalyst for industry-wide transformation.
During the launch event, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim emphasized the lasting impact of the ideas generated through this initiative, stating that the solutions developed would extend beyond the competition and contribute to redefining how the Maldives welcomes tourists, manages its industry, and safeguards its pristine natural environment while delivering enriched visitor experiences.
