The Maldives has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause while strongly backing the Gaza reconstruction plan adopted by the Arab League Summit. The statement was made during the Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah on March 7, 2025.
Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, who participated in the high-level meeting, condemned Israel’s continued aggression against Palestine and strongly opposed the calls for the displacement of Palestinians from their homeland. In his address, Dr. Khaleel underscored the violations of the ceasefire agreement and the dire humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict, urging for unhindered humanitarian aid and an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
Highlighting the Maldives’ proactive role in advocating for Palestinian rights, he reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to international legal efforts, citing its recent declaration of intervention in the case concerning Israel’s obligations regarding the activities of UN agencies in occupied Palestinian territories. Dr. Khaleel also emphasized that a just and lasting resolution can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In the remarks by, His Excellency the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, reaffirmed his strong support for the Gaza reconstruction plan endorsed by the Arab Summit, emphasizing the Palestinian people’s right to remain on their land. He described the initiative as a realistic and collective vision that necessitates broad financial and political backing to ensure its successful implementation. The Secretary-General underscored that this effort must be part of a comprehensive political and economic strategy aimed at achieving the two-state solution.
The session, attended by foreign ministers from 57 OIC member states, served as a platform to coordinate collective efforts against Israeli policies and reaffirm support for the Palestinian people’s right to sovereignty.
