Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has departed for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to participate in the Extraordinary Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, scheduled for March 7, 2025. The high-level session will address the escalating Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and efforts to displace them from their homeland.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Khaleel will engage in discussions with Arab and Islamic nations to reinforce Maldives’ stance against Israel’s attempts to forcibly remove Palestinians from their lands. The minister will also reaffirm the Maldives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to remain in their homeland and advocate for immediate international intervention.
The OIC, the world’s largest intergovernmental body representing Islamic nations, plays a crucial role in addressing challenges faced by Muslim communities worldwide. The upcoming session is expected to focus on the ongoing crisis in Gaza, including concerns over proposed territorial annexations that could lead to mass displacement.
The Maldives has also welcomed the recent adoption of Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan, endorsed during the Arab League Summit on Gaza in Cairo on March 4. The Maldivian government views the plan as a critical step toward relief and rebuilding efforts under the governance of the Palestinian Authority, emphasizing the need for a sustainable resolution that ensures the Palestinian people’s right to live in their homeland.
Consistently advocating for Palestinian sovereignty, the Maldives remains committed to supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with pre-1967 borders. The OIC session will also review the progress of ceasefire efforts in Gaza and explore diplomatic measures to prevent further violations of Palestinian rights.
