In a momentous achievement for Maldivian sports, the national women’s basketball team has secured their first-ever silver medal at the SABA Women’s Championship 2025, marking a historic milestone for the island nation. The championship, held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from 23rd to 26th February 2025, witnessed the Maldives team displaying commendable skill and resilience against South Asia’s top competitors.

The Vice President of the Maldives, Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, personally welcomed the team upon their arrival at Velana International Airport, celebrating their remarkable accomplishment on the international stage. Joining him in extending their congratulations were Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Mr. Abdullah Rafiu, Commissioner of Sports Mr. Mohamed Tholal, and Minister of State for Sports, Fitness and Recreation Mr. Mohamed Riyaz, all of whom acknowledged the team’s dedication and hard work.

The Maldives team faced a formidable Indian squad in the final match, where India claimed gold with a score of 107-32. Despite the final outcome, the silver medal marks a groundbreaking achievement for Maldivian women’s basketball, adding to their previous bronze medals earned in 2016 and 2022. The success of the team reflects the growing prominence of basketball in the Maldives and the country’s commitment to fostering talent in the sport.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also took to his official ‘X’ account to commend the team’s remarkable performance, emphasizing their unwavering determination and the pride they bring to the nation. The victory serves as an inspiration for aspiring female athletes across the Maldives, showcasing the potential of Maldivian sports on an international platform.
