The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) has confirmed its decision to significantly increase the Maldives’ annual country loan limit from USD 10 million to USD 40 million beginning in 2027, marking a major expansion in development financing available to support the country’s priority infrastructure projects.
The decision was confirmed during a courtesy call held following the signing of an agreement between the two sides, reflecting the continued strengthening of the longstanding development partnership between the Maldives and Kuwait. The increase follows discussions held on the sidelines of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Annual Meeting 2026, where opportunities to expand development cooperation and financing support for the Maldives were explored.
Under the revised financing framework, the Maldives will have access to up to USD 40 million annually through KFAED from 2027, four times the current annual country loan limit of USD 10 million. The enhanced allocation is expected to provide greater flexibility for the Government to advance key national development priorities, particularly major infrastructure and public development projects.
During the discussions, KFAED also expressed interest in supporting the development of the Thilafushi port project, an important infrastructure initiative expected to contribute to the Maldives’ broader economic and logistical development. Strengthening port capacity at Thilafushi is expected to support more efficient cargo handling, improve connectivity and provide additional infrastructure required to accommodate the country’s growing commercial and development needs.
The increased financing commitment highlights growing international confidence in the Maldives’ development agenda and the Government’s efforts to expand strategic partnerships with established development institutions. It also reinforces the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Kuwait, which has supported a range of important national development initiatives over the years.
The expanded cooperation with KFAED is expected to further strengthen the Maldives’ ability to undertake major infrastructure projects while advancing the Government’s broader objectives of improving connectivity, strengthening economic resilience and delivering sustainable development across the country.
