The Maldives has officially launched the Prosper MSME initiative, introducing a new platform to explore how the country’s postal network, digital services and Islamic financing solutions can support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in reaching wider domestic and international markets.

The initiative is being advanced through a joint study by Maldives Post Limited, the Universal Postal Union and the Islamic Development Bank Institute. The study will assess practical opportunities to strengthen market access for Maldivian businesses through postal infrastructure while examining digital financing solutions that could help smaller enterprises participate more effectively in e-commerce and emerging digital markets.

State Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Dr Abdulla Nazeer attended the launch ceremony at Maldives Post Limited as chief guest and assured the Government’s full support for the initiative. He highlighted the importance of close cooperation among relevant institutions to establish an appropriate legal and regulatory framework capable of supporting sustainable digital business growth.

Dr Nazeer noted that digital ordering has become an increasingly important part of modern commerce, creating a greater need for accessible financing solutions. He explained that many businesses require working capital to purchase products, materials and supplies before completing customer orders, while micro and smaller enterprises can face significant challenges when suitable financing options are limited.

The Prosper MSME initiative will therefore examine how postal services, digital platforms and Islamic financing mechanisms can be integrated to address these challenges. Consultations with businesses, regulators and other stakeholders are expected to identify practical solutions that can improve access to financial support while strengthening the wider business environment.

Maldives Post Limited Managing Director Ahmed Shafeeq said the programme also presents an opportunity to make greater use of the country’s established postal network. By combining the postal sector’s nationwide reach with modern digital services, he said the initiative could contribute to building a more inclusive, connected and prosperous digital economy.

Communications Authority of Maldives Chief Executive Officer Ilyas Ahmed also pledged the authority’s support, noting that the Maldives has been selected as one of only eight countries participating in the international study. The selection provides the country with an opportunity to assess how the model can be adapted to local market conditions and the needs of Maldivian entrepreneurs.

As part of the programme, Maldives Post Limited has announced a five-day consultation process beginning on 1 November, bringing together policy and regulatory authorities, industry representatives and other stakeholders. The discussions will focus on identifying the areas in which MSMEs require greater assistance and developing suitable technical assistance programmes in response.

The initiative is expected to strengthen opportunities for Maldivian MSMEs to access new customers through postal, e-commerce, logistics and digital channels. By improving connectivity between businesses, financing services and delivery networks, Prosper MSME could further support entrepreneurship, broaden participation in the digital economy and enhance the competitiveness of smaller businesses across the Maldives.
