National carrier Maldivian has strengthened its commercial presence in China with the opening of a new office in Beijing, reinforcing the airline’s engagement with the Maldives’ largest tourism source market and supporting wider efforts to expand connectivity between the two countries.

The Beijing office was officially opened on 26 October and will serve as a dedicated base for Maldivian to work more closely with travel agents, commercial partners and customers across the Chinese market. The presence is expected to support stronger market representation, improved coordination with industry partners and greater visibility for Maldivian’s growing international network.

Alongside the office opening, Maldivian conducted a China roadshow in collaboration with MegaCap, the airline’s General Sales Agent in China, with participation and support from Visit Maldives Corporation. The event brought together representatives from the tourism, travel and aviation sectors, creating an important platform to promote the Maldives while exploring new commercial opportunities in both passenger and cargo services.

Maldivian Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas said the new Beijing office would bring the airline closer to its partners and travellers in one of the Maldives’ most important tourism markets. The expansion reflects the carrier’s wider strategy to strengthen international operations and support the continued growth of the country’s tourism industry through improved air connectivity.

The development builds on Maldivian’s introduction of its first Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft in January 2025. The aircraft significantly expanded the national carrier’s long-haul capabilities and enabled the launch of direct services to major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, providing travellers with more convenient access to the Maldives.

China continues to play a major role in the Maldives’ tourism sector, accounting for around 19 percent of total tourist arrivals so far this year. The continued expansion of Maldivian’s presence in the market complements the Government’s efforts to strengthen tourism partnerships, improve international connectivity and diversify opportunities across the aviation and hospitality sectors.

With the new Beijing office, direct wide-body services and closer collaboration with tourism and travel partners, Maldivian is positioning itself to further support visitor growth from China while promoting the Maldives as a leading island destination for travellers from one of the world’s largest outbound tourism markets.
