The Maldives has strengthened its international tax transparency framework by endorsing an updated global standard for the automatic exchange of financial account information, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to modernising tax administration and maintaining alignment with evolving international regulatory practices.

Commissioner General of Taxation Fathimath Ameeza signed the Addendum to the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement on Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information on behalf of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, marking an important development in the country’s continued efforts to enhance cooperation with international tax administrations.

The endorsement aligns the Maldives with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s revised Common Reporting Standard, widely referred to as CRS 2.0. The updated framework expands the scope of information exchanged between participating jurisdictions and introduces stronger requirements for financial institutions to identify, review and report relevant financial account information.

Under the revised standard, financial institutions will be required to comply with broader reporting obligations and enhanced due diligence procedures. The framework also reflects developments in the global financial sector by covering emerging financial products and certain digital assets that were not fully addressed under earlier reporting arrangements.

The strengthened system is expected to provide tax authorities with greater visibility over financial assets held across borders, supporting more effective monitoring of international financial activity and improving the ability of participating jurisdictions to address offshore tax evasion and non-compliance.

MIRA said the endorsement reflects the Maldives’ continuing policy of strengthening regulatory oversight while ensuring that the country’s tax administration remains consistent with internationally recognised standards. The development also demonstrates the Government’s wider emphasis on institutional capacity, financial integrity and a transparent business environment as the Maldivian economy continues to expand its engagement with global markets.

For international investors, financial institutions and businesses operating in the Maldives, alignment with updated global reporting standards further strengthens the country’s position as a jurisdiction committed to responsible financial governance. Clearer reporting requirements and internationally compatible compliance mechanisms can also support greater confidence among overseas partners and institutions engaging with the Maldivian financial system.

Domestic authorities are now preparing the necessary compliance and administrative arrangements to incorporate the revised requirements into the national framework. The Government has scheduled formal implementation of the updated standard for 2027, allowing relevant institutions time to prepare their internal systems, due diligence processes and reporting procedures.

The latest development forms part of the Maldives’ broader effort to strengthen tax administration, improve regulatory effectiveness and maintain a credible and transparent financial environment capable of supporting sustainable economic growth and deeper international cooperation.
