The Maldives has welcomed 101,366 tourists from Germany so far in 2026, making the country its fourth-largest source market by nationality, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. The figures highlight Germany’s continuing importance to the tourism sector as efforts advance to strengthen travel partnerships and attract more visitors.

Germany contributed 167,822 tourist arrivals during 2025. This year’s arrivals have already passed the 100,000 mark, providing a foundation for further destination promotion and cooperation with travel industry partners.

A Memorandum of Understanding between Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) and DERTOUR Deutschland GmbH forms part of efforts to expand the German market. The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Germany, where he participated in the Maldives-German Business Roundtable, connecting tourism promotion with wider commercial engagement.

Under the MoU, the parties agreed to work towards bringing 100,000 tourists from Germany in 2026 and 200,000 in 2027. These partnership objectives reflect an ambition to increase visitor traffic through coordinated efforts. The national arrival figures cover all German tourists and do not, on their own, establish how many travelled through the partnership.

Cooperation with travel businesses offers an avenue to strengthen the Maldives’ visibility and connect destination promotion with holiday bookings. For resorts, guesthouses and related service providers, sustained engagement with established source markets can support demand across different accommodation and visitor experiences.

The ministry’s figures show that China remains the Maldives’ largest source market, with 308,913 arrivals so far this year. Russia ranks second with 232,676 tourists, followed by England with 121,239. Germany’s fourth-place position reinforces its role within the destination’s international visitor base.

Overall, approximately 1.6 million tourists have arrived in the Maldives during 2026 to date. Of these, around one million stayed at resorts, while 349,861 chose guesthouses, demonstrating demand for both resort holidays and accommodation on local islands.

The accommodation figures illustrate the breadth of the country’s tourism offering. Resorts continue to attract a substantial share of visitors, while guesthouses provide another route to experiencing the Maldives and participating in its local tourism economy.

Germany’s contribution comes as the Maldives works to build stronger international tourism relationships and expand its reach. With arrivals exceeding 100,000 and a higher partnership target set for 2027, cooperation between VMC and DERTOUR provides a platform for further engagement with an important European market.
