Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru celebrated its anniversary month in September with a programme of marine conservation, wellbeing and community experiences, inviting guests to rediscover the resort’s “Original Maldives” spirit. More than three decades after welcoming its first guests, the island continues to place its connection to nature, personal wellbeing and shared experiences at the centre of its approach to barefoot luxury.

The anniversary programme brought together activities that reflected the resort’s relationship with the ocean and island life. Guests were offered opportunities to participate in reef protection, explore the surrounding marine environment and enjoy moments of reflection, while spending time alongside the people who contribute to Vabbinfaru’s hospitality.

Marine conservation formed a central part of the celebrations. The resort’s Marine Lab invited visitors to learn about its ongoing work, beginning with a major coral micro-fragmentation planting on 22 September. The activity highlighted one of the restoration methods being explored by the team to support reef recovery around the island.

On 23 September, the Save The Reef guided snorkel gave guests an opportunity to enter the water with Vabbinfaru’s marine biologists. Participants helped remove debris from the house reef while learning about its ecosystem, combining underwater discovery with a practical contribution to protecting the marine environment.

The Marine Lab also introduced a new coral restoration initiative on 23 September with the installation of a grand underwater coral tree. Positioned approximately seven metres beneath the surface, the structures were designed to allow coral fragments to grow away from heavy sedimentation and potential predators.

The coral trees formed part of a pilot project monitored alongside the resort’s existing restoration approaches, including rope nurseries, micro-fragmentation and the electric reef barnacle. By examining different methods, the Marine Lab team continued its efforts to understand how best to support the recovery of the reef surrounding Vabbinfaru.

These experiences placed conservation within the guest journey, offering visitors a closer understanding of the waters that define the island. Participation in guided activities also created a connection between enjoying the Maldives’ marine environment and contributing to its protection.

Community interaction featured in the anniversary programme through a friendly beach football match on 23 September. Guests and resort staff gathered on the sand for a relaxed afternoon beside the sea, sharing an activity that reflected the welcoming sense of community associated with Vabbinfaru.

Wellbeing experiences provided another dimension to the celebrations. On 26 September, resident wellbeing practitioner Dr Sharma led a special full moon meditation experience themed “Harvest of the Heart.” Drawing inspiration from the Harvest Moon and the changing rhythms of nature, the session focused on renewal, reflection and welcoming the season ahead.

The guided experience combined grounding breathwork, gentle movement and meditative sound. It offered participants a moment to pause, consider habits they wished to leave behind and reflect on positive personal changes, complementing the anniversary programme’s wider emphasis on connection with nature and self.

Throughout the anniversary period, guests also received a complimentary wellbeing consultation, alongside special savings at Banyan Gallery and Banyan Tree Spa & Wellbeing. These additions allowed visitors to explore further aspects of the resort’s wellbeing and retail offerings during their stay.

The celebrations extended to the Marine Centre, with additional perks on excursions and watersports activities. Whether enjoying time above the water or discovering the house reef, guests had more opportunities to engage with the marine surroundings that remain integral to the Vabbinfaru experience.

Together, the programme presented an anniversary celebration rooted in the island’s character. Reef restoration, guided exploration, wellbeing and informal community activities offered different ways to experience a resort whose identity has developed around its relationship with nature.

“For us, the anniversary honours the people, purpose and passion that have shaped the legacy of Vabbinfaru over the past three decades,” said Tho Pham (Yara), Director of Marketing & Communications. “The Original Maldives spirit remains at the heart of who we are. Here, legacy is not preserved, it is lived.”

Through its September celebrations, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru reaffirmed that spirit by bringing guests closer to the island’s environment and community. The programme demonstrated how a luxury resort stay can combine relaxation and discovery with meaningful participation in the care of the destination.
