Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said the positive results of reforms introduced to the national airline, Maldivian, are becoming increasingly visible as the Government continues efforts to strengthen the carrier, improve employee welfare and enhance services supporting the country’s tourism industry.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of Maldivian’s new seaplane terminal, Minister Ameen said the facility had been developed to a standard recognised within the international seaplane industry. He said Maldivian’s recent progress demonstrated how a state-owned company could be strengthened to deliver greater value to the country.

The Minister said the Government’s focus is to continue developing Maldivian into a stronger and more sustainable national airline. He described the carrier as a source of national pride and said work carried out over the past three years has focused on transforming its services and establishing a new operational model capable of supporting future growth.

Minister Ameen also highlighted the importance of improving conditions for Maldivian employees. Rather than concentrating only on infrastructure and capital assets, he said the Government is giving priority to creating a better working environment and ensuring that staff have access to essential services within the company.

Housing has been identified as another key area of support for employees. The Minister said two plots of land have already been allocated for staff housing and that practical work at the site is expected to begin soon. Maldivian has also initiated procurement related to its staff housing development, reflecting continued work to advance the project.

A dedicated building capable of accommodating Island Aviation’s operations is also under construction, further strengthening the institutional infrastructure required for the airline’s expanding activities.

Minister Ameen said President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision is for the Government to meet, within its capacity, the operational requirements of Maldivian and support the company in addressing its future needs. The approach is intended to strengthen the airline’s long-term performance while improving the services it provides to passengers and industry partners.

Maldivian plays an important role in the country’s tourism network, particularly through domestic and seaplane connectivity linking Velana International Airport with resort destinations and island communities. Stronger airline operations and improved passenger facilities can contribute to smoother resort transfers and a more seamless travel experience for visitors arriving in the Maldives.

The opening of the upgraded seaplane terminal, together with investment in employees, operational facilities and service development, reflects the Government’s wider focus on strengthening aviation infrastructure and supporting the Maldives’ position as one of the world’s leading island tourism destinations.
