Velana International Airport Crowned Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport 2026 for 13th Time

Velana International Airport (VIA), the Maldives’ main international gateway, has been named Indian Ocean’s Leading Airport 2026 at the World Travel Awards, marking the 13th time the airport has secured the prestigious regional title.
The award was presented during the Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony held at CROSSROADS Maldives on 27 September. Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), accepted the award on behalf of VIA.
VIA emerged as the winner from a competitive field that included airports in Madagascar, Réunion, Seychelles and Mauritius, further strengthening the Maldives’ position as one of the Indian Ocean’s leading tourism destinations and aviation hubs.
“This recognition reflects the dedication of our team, the continued progress we are making at Velana International Airport, and the valuable contribution of our partners who continue to support and work alongside us,” Shareef said. “As the Maldives’ main gateway, we remain focused on raising standards, enhancing the passenger experience and positioning VIA as a modern, efficient and globally competitive airport.”
The recognition comes as the Maldives continues to expand and modernise its aviation infrastructure to support rising international passenger traffic and the continued growth of the tourism sector. As the primary entry point for millions of visitors travelling to the country’s resorts and islands, VIA plays a central role in connecting the Maldives with major global markets.
For the resort industry, the performance and development of VIA are particularly important, as efficient airport services, stronger international connectivity and improved passenger handling directly support smoother transfers to resorts across the archipelago. The airport serves as the first point of arrival for travellers before onward journeys by domestic flight, seaplane or speedboat to resort destinations throughout the Maldives.
MACL said it will continue improving the airport’s services and facilities as passenger demand grows, with a focus on strengthening operational efficiency and enhancing the overall travel experience. Continued investment in VIA is expected to support the Government’s broader efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure, improve connectivity and maintain the Maldives’ competitiveness as a premium global destination.
