President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations by embracing innovation, developing industry skills and expanding the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence across the sector.
In his message marking World Tourism Day, observed on 27 September, President Muizzu highlighted the central role tourism continues to play in the Maldives’ economic development, international connectivity and creation of opportunities for communities across the country.
The President extended his appreciation to the people, local communities and tourism industry partners whose collective contribution has helped build the Maldives into an internationally recognised destination. He noted that the success of Maldivian tourism has been shaped by decades of dedication across resorts, guesthouses, aviation, transport, travel services and other segments that together form the country’s tourism ecosystem.
Tourism remains one of the strongest pillars of the Maldivian economy and has played an important role in connecting the island nation with markets across the world. The sector has also supported employment, entrepreneurship, infrastructure development and economic activity across the atolls, while strengthening the Maldives’ international profile as a premium island destination.
President Muizzu said the rapid development of digital technologies and artificial intelligence is transforming the global travel industry, including the way travellers discover destinations, research accommodation, plan journeys, make reservations and engage with tourism services throughout their holidays.
Against this changing global landscape, the President stressed that the Maldives must continue to adapt, innovate and lead. He said the Government is committed to embracing innovation, investing in skills and capabilities, and making effective use of digital solutions to further strengthen the tourism industry and improve the overall visitor experience.
Greater adoption of digital solutions offers significant opportunities for the Maldives’ tourism sector, including more efficient service delivery, improved communication with travellers, enhanced destination marketing and increasingly personalised guest experiences. Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies can also support tourism businesses in analysing visitor preferences, improving operational efficiency and responding more effectively to changing international travel trends.
For the Maldives, where tourism products are spread across numerous islands and atolls, digital connectivity also provides opportunities to connect visitors more efficiently with resorts, hotels, guesthouses, local communities and tourism-related services throughout the country. Continued investment in technology and digital infrastructure can further strengthen the seamless travel experience that has become increasingly important to international travellers.
The country’s extensive resort sector remains at the heart of the Maldives’ global tourism identity. The distinctive one-island-one-resort model, combined with private island settings, high standards of hospitality, marine experiences and diverse accommodation offerings, has enabled the Maldives to maintain a strong presence in the international luxury and leisure travel markets.
Continued digital development can further complement the resort experience, from the initial stages of travel planning and reservations to arrival services, accommodation management, guest communication and personalised experiences. By combining technological advancement with the human service for which Maldivian hospitality is renowned, the sector has an opportunity to deliver increasingly efficient and memorable experiences while maintaining the distinctive character of the destination.
President Muizzu emphasised that technology should complement rather than replace the human touch that remains at the heart of Maldivian hospitality. This approach places people and service quality at the centre of the Government’s vision for tourism development while recognising the growing importance of digital tools in maintaining competitiveness in the international market.
Skills development is another key component of this vision. As technology changes the way tourism businesses operate, investment in the capabilities of Maldivian professionals is expected to help the workforce take advantage of emerging opportunities in digital hospitality, tourism management, technology, destination marketing, data-driven services and other specialised areas.
The President also stressed that technological advancement must progress alongside efforts to protect the characteristics that have made the Maldives one of the world’s most sought-after destinations. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding the country’s natural beauty, distinctive identity and tradition of warm hospitality while harnessing opportunities created by the digital age.
The Maldives’ natural environment remains fundamental to its tourism appeal, with its tropical islands, white-sand beaches, lagoons and rich marine environment forming the foundation of the visitor experience. Preserving these assets while advancing modern tourism services is central to maintaining the destination’s long-term competitiveness and international reputation.
President Muizzu said continued innovation, collaboration and investment in people would be essential to ensuring that the Maldives remains a resilient, sustainable and future-ready tourism destination in an increasingly competitive global travel industry.
World Tourism Day is observed annually on 27 September to highlight tourism’s contribution to economic and social development and to encourage discussion on the future direction of the global industry. This year’s occasion provided the Maldives with an opportunity to reaffirm its ambition to combine its internationally renowned hospitality and natural attractions with technology, innovation and stronger human capital as it prepares for the next phase of tourism development.
The Government’s emphasis on digital transformation and skills development reflects a broader effort to ensure that the Maldives continues evolving alongside changing global traveller expectations while preserving the qualities that have built the country’s reputation across international tourism markets.
With a globally recognised resort industry, expanding tourism offerings and a growing focus on digital solutions and workforce capabilities, the Maldives is positioning its tourism sector to capture new opportunities while delivering increasingly sophisticated experiences for millions of travellers who choose the island nation as their destination.
