The Maldives National University (MNU) has renewed its partnership agreement with three Hilton-branded resorts in the Maldives, strengthening cooperation between the country’s national university and leading international hospitality properties to support practical training, professional development and employment opportunities for Maldivian students.

The renewed agreement covers Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, three prominent luxury resorts operating within the Maldives’ internationally recognised tourism industry. The partnership is designed to give students studying at MNU’s Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies (FHTS) greater exposure to professional resort operations while supporting the development of a skilled local workforce for the tourism sector.

MNU Vice Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam and FHTS Dean Zulaikha Reesha Rashad attended the signing ceremony on behalf of the university. The participating resorts were represented by Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi General Manager TJ Joulak, Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa General Manager Mark Eletr and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island General Manager Nick Flynn, together with other senior officials from the three properties.

FHTS Lecturer Ismail Shiaru described the collaboration as a highly successful partnership that has developed over the past two to three years. He highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for students to apply academic knowledge in real hospitality environments, noting that practical exposure remains one of the most important components of professional education in the tourism sector.

Through the partnership, MNU students are able to take the knowledge and skills gained through their academic programmes and apply them within five-star resort environments. The experience allows students to better understand international service standards, workplace expectations, operational systems and the day-to-day responsibilities associated with different areas of resort management.

Under the renewed agreement, students enrolled at FHTS will continue to receive internship opportunities across a broad range of operational departments. These include front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen operations, marketing and various back-of-house functions. The placements are expected to provide students with direct industry exposure while helping them develop the practical, interpersonal and technical skills required to build successful careers in hospitality.

The collaboration will also extend beyond student internships. MNU and the participating resorts plan to conduct activities that provide university lecturers with additional training, industry exposure and professional development opportunities. This is expected to strengthen links between academic teaching and current industry practices, helping ensure that hospitality education continues to reflect the evolving requirements of the Maldives’ tourism sector.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is among the Maldives’ leading luxury resort properties and operates under Hilton’s internationally recognised Waldorf Astoria brand. The resort offers an extensive range of accommodation, dining and leisure experiences and provides students with exposure to the operational requirements of a high-end international hospitality environment.

Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa is another key participant in the partnership, providing students with opportunities to gain experience across a wide range of departments within a modern luxury resort operation. Its participation gives students access to internationally established hospitality systems, service standards and professional development practices.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, one of the Maldives’ long-established luxury resort destinations, also plays an important role in the collaboration. The resort’s operational scale and international positioning provide students with opportunities to observe and participate in multiple aspects of resort management while gaining experience within a globally recognised hospitality brand.

Representatives of the three resorts said they were pleased to continue supporting the development of Maldivian talent within the tourism industry and to create meaningful opportunities for students preparing to enter the sector. The renewed agreement reflects continued cooperation between higher education institutions and private-sector tourism operators in developing the next generation of hospitality professionals.

Over the past several years, a significant number of MNU students have already received training at the three resorts through the partnership. The practical experience gained during these placements has provided students with valuable preparation for employment and has supported their transition from university education into professional careers.

MNU also noted that the participating resorts recognise the standard and capabilities of students graduating from the university and have shown strong interest in recruiting them after they complete their studies. This reflects the growing importance of closer cooperation between educational institutions and employers in strengthening the Maldives’ domestic talent pool.

The continued partnership comes as the Government places strong emphasis on human capital development, skills enhancement and expanding employment opportunities for Maldivians within the country’s key industries. Tourism remains the main pillar of the Maldivian economy, and stronger collaboration between universities and internationally established resort operators is expected to contribute to building a highly capable local workforce while creating sustainable career opportunities for young Maldivians.

By renewing the agreement with Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, MNU is further strengthening the connection between academic education and professional hospitality training. The collaboration is expected to continue providing students with practical experience, industry exposure and clearer pathways into employment while supporting the broader national objective of increasing Maldivian participation across all levels of the tourism industry.
