Saudi Arabia has expressed its deep appreciation for the Maldives’ longstanding policy of friendship and brotherhood towards the Kingdom, highlighting the strong diplomatic relations and expanding development cooperation between the two nations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday to mark the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s 96th National Day, Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives, H.E. Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani, commended the Maldives for consistently maintaining a sincere and brotherly relationship with Saudi Arabia, describing the partnership as one founded on strong Islamic bonds, mutual respect, compassion and shared values.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia views with deep appreciation the sincere and brotherly policy that the Republic of Maldives has always maintained towards Saudi Arabia. These policies reflect the strong solidarity between the two nations, as well as the enduring relationship built upon mutual respect and compassion,” the Ambassador stated.
Ambassador Al-Qahtani highlighted that bilateral relations have continued to strengthen through cooperation in development, politics, education and Islamic affairs, reflecting the longstanding friendship between the two countries and their shared commitment to advancing mutual interests.
Highlighting development cooperation as a central pillar of the partnership, the Ambassador revealed that the Saudi Fund for Development has contributed USD 488 million towards development projects in the Maldives since 1978. The financial assistance underscores Saudi Arabia’s longstanding role in supporting the Maldives’ national development priorities and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Ambassador’s remarks come as the Maldives and Saudi Arabia continue to maintain close diplomatic relations, supported by decades of development cooperation and shared Islamic values. The partnership remains an important foundation for strengthening bilateral engagement and expanding opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Saudi Arabia celebrates its National Day annually on September 23, commemorating the unification of Hijaz and Najd under King Abdulaziz bin Saud and the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on September 23, 1932, following a royal decree issued by the Kingdom’s founding monarch.
