The official symbol of the Maldivian Rufiyaa has been incorporated into the Unicode Standard, strengthening the international digital recognition of the Maldives’ national currency and enabling its consistent use across websites, mobile applications, financial systems and other digital platforms worldwide.
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the country’s central bank, announced on Wednesday that the Rufiyaa symbol has been assigned the Unicode code point U+20C2 under Unicode Version 18.0, published by The Unicode Consortium. The inclusion establishes an internationally recognised technical standard for representing the symbol across modern operating systems, software applications and digital services.
The development marks an important step in the continued modernisation of the Maldives’ financial and digital infrastructure. Until now, the Rufiyaa symbol had often been displayed using different designs, custom fonts and varying formatting methods across digital platforms. Its formal inclusion in Unicode will enable developers, financial institutions, businesses, government agencies and technology providers to use a single standardised representation of the currency symbol.
The official Rufiyaa symbol was formally introduced by the Maldives Monetary Authority in 2022 and has since become an established visual representation of the national currency. Its incorporation into the Unicode Standard now provides the technical foundation required for broader and more consistent international digital usage.
Unicode is the global character-encoding standard used by computer systems, websites, smartphones, applications and digital services to represent written characters and symbols consistently across different devices and languages. By assigning the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol its own dedicated Unicode code point, the symbol can increasingly be recognised and rendered as a standard currency character rather than relying on separately designed graphics or customised font solutions.
The MMA said the inclusion will facilitate the seamless adoption of the national currency symbol across digital tools and platforms. Full functional availability will progressively become possible as operating systems, applications, fonts and other technology platforms introduce updates supporting Unicode Version 18.0.
The international standardisation is also expected to support the Maldives’ expanding digital economy by improving consistency in financial documents, payment platforms, accounting systems, banking applications, e-commerce services, government systems and other technology-based services where the Maldivian Rufiyaa is displayed. As more services in the Maldives continue to transition towards digital platforms, having an internationally standardised currency symbol provides greater uniformity in how the national currency is represented locally and internationally.
The development complements the Government’s broader focus on strengthening digital services, modernising public and financial infrastructure and expanding the role of technology across the Maldivian economy. A standardised national currency symbol can also contribute to stronger recognition of the Rufiyaa within international financial and technology environments as the Maldives continues to increase its participation in global digital networks.
The visual identity of the Rufiyaa symbol itself has a public origin. The design was selected through a public competition organised before its official introduction, with an official judging panel choosing the winning entry. Following its selection, the symbol was formally adopted and introduced by the Maldives Monetary Authority in 2022.
Since then, the symbol has been used as the official graphic representation of the Maldivian Rufiyaa and has also appeared on physical Maldivian banknotes, strengthening its position as a recognised element of the country’s monetary identity.
The Maldives Monetary Authority expressed appreciation to all parties who contributed to the technical work and coordination required to secure the inclusion of the Rufiyaa symbol in the Unicode Standard. The process represents the culmination of efforts to ensure that the Maldives’ national currency symbol is supported within the international framework governing digital text and character representation.
With its inclusion in Unicode Version 18.0 under U+20C2, the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol is positioned for much wider and more consistent use across the global digital ecosystem, providing the Maldives with a standardised currency identity suited to an increasingly connected and technology-driven economy.
