President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the recent State Visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has opened a new chapter in Maldives–Malaysia relations, with official discussions between the two countries establishing what he described as a strong foundation for deeper cooperation across economic, social and strategic sectors.
Prime Minister Anwar visited the Maldives from 14 to 15 September 2026 at the invitation of President Dr Muizzu, marking his first visit to the country since assuming office as Prime Minister of Malaysia in November 2022. The visit built on President Dr Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia in April 2025 and continued high-level engagement between two countries that have maintained diplomatic relations for 58 years.
Following the visit, President Dr Muizzu thanked Prime Minister Anwar and said the official discussions had created a strong foundation for the future of both countries. Prime Minister Anwar, in a separate social media message, said the two leaders had discussed matters of mutual interest and expressed hope that the friendly and brotherly relationship between Malaysia and the Maldives would continue to strengthen for the benefit of their peoples.
The discussions covered an increasingly broad bilateral agenda, including trade and investment, education, healthcare, tourism, sustainable development, Islamic affairs and defence. Official talks at the President’s Office also considered opportunities for cooperation in natural resources and ways to address challenges faced by Maldivians residing in Malaysia, while both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral engagement.
A major economic outcome of the visit was Malaysia’s decision to extend a USD 100 million currency swap facility to the Maldives through the central banks of the two countries. President Dr Muizzu expressed his appreciation for the facility, while Prime Minister Anwar also highlighted the importance of strengthening the financial partnership between the two nations. The arrangement represents an additional avenue of financial cooperation at a time when the Maldives Government is working to strengthen economic resilience, diversify international partnerships and expand access to external financial cooperation.
Economic relations are also expected to expand through plans to begin negotiations towards a Preferential Trade Agreement. Malaysia agreed in principle to commence negotiations, creating a framework through which the two countries could pursue stronger commercial links and greater opportunities for businesses. President Dr Muizzu said discussions on a trade agreement would contribute to stronger economic ties and create additional opportunities for the people and business communities of both countries.
The Government has also identified considerable potential for Malaysian investment and cooperation in sectors that are important to the Maldives’ long-term economic development. During the visit, areas discussed included renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, Islamic finance, tourism and the halal industry. President Dr Muizzu also highlighted opportunities in technology, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, cybersecurity, health and human development, the blue economy, trade and investment.
Tourism, one of the most important economic sectors for the Maldives, featured prominently in the bilateral discussions. Both countries agreed on the potential for expanded cooperation in tourism, while talks involving senior officials also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in tourism and higher education. Stronger engagement with Malaysia could support greater tourism-sector cooperation, professional exchanges, investment engagement and links between businesses operating in the two markets.
Education and people-to-people connections remain another important component of the relationship. President Dr Muizzu acknowledged Malaysia’s longstanding role as an education destination for Maldivians and welcomed Malaysia’s support in areas including higher education scholarships and the inclusion of the Maldives in Malaysia’s Graduate Pass Scheme. The two sides also discussed visa facilitation and enhanced consular support for Maldivians, reflecting the significant human connections that have developed between the countries over several decades.
The visit also resulted in the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding covering defence and Islamic affairs. The agreements establish frameworks for closer institutional engagement in these areas and form part of the wider effort by both governments to broaden the scope of bilateral cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic and economic engagement.
President Dr Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar further discussed international and regional issues and agreed to continue coordination through multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Commonwealth. Climate action was also included in the discussions, particularly the interests of Small Island Developing States and the importance of climate finance.
President Dr Muizzu also thanked Prime Minister Anwar for the message he sent to the congress of the People’s National Congress, the governing party. During the PNC Congress, the President expressed appreciation for the message on behalf of party members. Prime Minister Anwar’s message referred to opportunities for Malaysia to share experience in areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, the halal economy and Islamic finance.
The State Visit concluded on 15 September following official talks, the exchange of agreements and a series of high-level engagements. President Dr Muizzu said Prime Minister Anwar’s visit had opened a new chapter in the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Malaysia and expressed confidence that relations would continue to expand in the years ahead.
With cooperation now extending from trade, investment and financial arrangements to tourism, healthcare, education, technology, Islamic affairs, defence and sustainable development, the September visit has substantially broadened the agenda for Maldives–Malaysia relations. The understandings reached during the visit provide both governments with a wider framework for translating their longstanding diplomatic relationship into practical economic, institutional and people-to-people cooperation.
