Maldives Premier Bank has officially commenced banking operations in the Maldives, expanding the country’s financial services sector with the introduction of a new locally established banking institution serving individuals, businesses and corporate customers.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu attended the official launch ceremony held at Barcelos Nasandhura, where the bank formally introduced its services to the public. During the ceremony, President Muizzu officially launched Maldives Premier Bank’s dedicated mobile banking application and internet banking portal, providing customers with convenient digital access to a range of banking services.

With the commencement of operations, Maldives Premier Bank becomes the ninth bank licensed to operate and provide banking services in the Maldives. The bank had also opened its first branch ahead of the formal launch of its services, establishing its physical presence while simultaneously developing its digital banking infrastructure to meet the evolving requirements of customers.

The launch of Maldives Premier Bank adds further capacity to the Maldivian banking sector at a time when the country continues to pursue economic diversification, private sector development and greater participation by local investors in key industries. The introduction of an additional banking institution is expected to broaden access to financial services, strengthen competition within the sector and create additional opportunities for individuals and businesses seeking modern banking solutions.

President Muizzu’s participation in the launch reflected the Government’s continued support for strengthening the national financial sector and encouraging greater Maldivian participation in economic development. Expanding the range of financial institutions operating in the country is expected to complement the Government’s broader efforts to create a more competitive and investment-friendly economic environment while supporting entrepreneurship and business growth.

During the ceremony, Maldives Premier Bank presented President Muizzu with a commemorative plaque in recognition of the occasion. The plaque was presented by Maldives Premier Bank shareholder and founder Mohamed Ali Janah.

Speaking at the ceremony, Maldives Monetary Authority Governor Ahmed Munawwar highlighted the considerable opportunities available for further development and expansion of the banking industry in the Maldives. He said the Maldives Monetary Authority was working to establish a conducive regulatory and financial environment that would encourage greater participation by Maldivian investors in the banking sector.

The Governor’s remarks highlighted the potential for locally backed financial institutions to play a greater role in supporting the country’s economic development. As the Maldivian economy continues to expand across tourism, trade, construction, real estate, fisheries and other emerging sectors, the availability of diversified banking services is becoming increasingly important for supporting investment, improving access to finance and facilitating commercial activity.

Maldives Premier Bank Chairperson Ayesha Nurain Janah said she hoped the bank would make a meaningful contribution to the continued advancement of the Maldivian economy. She described the commencement of operations as only the beginning of the bank’s development and said Maldives Premier Bank intends to pursue further progress and expansion in the years ahead.

The bank’s introduction of both mobile and internet banking services from the beginning of its operations also reflects the increasing importance of digital financial services in the Maldives. The platforms are expected to provide customers with greater convenience in accessing banking facilities and conducting transactions, complementing the services available through the bank’s physical branch network.

Maldives Premier Bank is expected to serve a broad customer base comprising individuals, businesses and companies. Its entry into the market provides customers with an additional choice of banking institution while creating further opportunities for the development of financial products and services tailored to the requirements of the Maldivian economy.

During the launch ceremony, Maldives Premier Bank also recognised the technical partners that contributed to establishing the bank and its operational infrastructure. Commemorative plaques were presented to the technical partners by Chairperson Ayesha Nurain Janah.

Work to establish Maldives Premier Bank began in May last year following the issuance of its operating licence by the Maldives Monetary Authority. Since then, preparations have included establishing the bank’s operational framework, opening its first branch and developing the technology required to provide secure and accessible banking services.

The commencement of Maldives Premier Bank’s operations represents a further expansion of the Maldives’ banking landscape and supports the Government’s efforts to promote private investment, strengthen financial sector development and increase opportunities for Maldivian participation in strategically important areas of the economy. With its physical and digital banking services now operational, the bank is positioned to contribute to the country’s growing demand for accessible, competitive and modern financial services.
