Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced plans to allocate six additional commercial spaces at Malé North Harbour to businesses interested in providing cargo storage and delivery services to vessels operating from the harbour.
MPL Assistant General Manager Ahmed Azzam Shareef said several major companies have already been allocated spaces at the harbour to provide commercial and essential supply services. These include State Trading Organisation, Maldives Water and Sewerage Company and Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company.
As part of the expansion, MPL has designated the lower level of the café previously operated at North Harbour for commercial purposes. Six additional spaces within the area will be leased to eligible parties through a competitive bidding process.
The successful bidders will be permitted to use the allocated spaces for commercial warehousing, the storage of goods and the distribution of essential supplies required by vessels. The facilities are expected to support the efficient delivery of food products, water, fisheries-related supplies, equipment and other operational necessities used by vessels travelling between Malé and islands across the Maldives.
MPL said priority will be given to wholesalers during the allocation process. Providing dedicated commercial spaces within the harbour is expected to allow suppliers to maintain sufficient stocks close to vessel berthing areas, enabling faster and more convenient access to essential goods.
The arrangement is also expected to reduce the time vessel operators spend travelling to different locations in Malé to purchase and collect supplies. By consolidating commercial storage and delivery services within the harbour area, MPL aims to improve cargo handling efficiency and support more organised vessel provisioning operations.
Malé North Harbour is one of the country’s principal maritime transport hubs, serving cargo vessels, supply boats and other vessels connecting the capital with communities and businesses throughout the atolls. The harbour plays an important role in the domestic movement of food, construction materials, household goods and other essential commodities.
The allocation of additional commercial spaces is expected to further strengthen the harbour’s role as a central logistics and distribution point. It will also create new opportunities for wholesalers and service providers seeking to expand their operations within the maritime transport sector.
MPL said the initiative is expected to benefit both vessel operators and commercial service providers by improving the availability, storage and timely delivery of goods within the harbour. The development is also anticipated to contribute to more reliable domestic supply chains and enhance the overall efficiency of cargo transportation across the Maldives.
