The Maldives has expanded its tourism accommodation capacity by more than 600 beds during the first half of the year, reflecting the continued development and resilience of the country’s tourism industry despite ongoing global economic challenges.
Statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation show that 68,142 tourist beds are currently in operation across the Maldives. This represents an increase of 667 beds compared with the 67,475 beds recorded at the end of last year.
The expansion demonstrates continued investor confidence in the Maldives as one of the world’s leading island tourism destinations. Additional accommodation capacity also enables the country to welcome a broader range of international travellers while supporting economic activity, employment opportunities and tourism-related businesses throughout the islands.
A total of 1,302 tourism establishments are currently operating across the country. These include 179 resorts, 934 guesthouses, 173 safari vessels and 16 hotels, highlighting the diversity of accommodation available to visitors seeking different travel experiences across the archipelago.
Resorts remain a central component of the Maldivian tourism industry, offering internationally recognised hospitality within distinctive island environments. The country’s resort model provides visitors with access to individual island destinations, premium accommodation, marine activities, dining experiences and personalised services surrounded by the natural beauty of the Indian Ocean.
The operation of 179 resorts also reflects the scale and maturity of the Maldives’ tourism sector. Resort development contributes significantly to employment, skills development, transport services, food supply chains, construction, fisheries, agriculture and numerous other industries connected to tourism.
Alongside the resort sector, the expanding guesthouse industry continues to strengthen community-based tourism by enabling visitors to experience local island life and Maldivian culture. Safari vessels, meanwhile, provide opportunities for travellers to explore multiple atolls and marine locations, while hotels serve visitors in urban centres and other strategically important destinations.
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation noted that accommodation capacity has continued to grow despite challenging conditions affecting the global economy. The sustained expansion illustrates the ability of the Maldivian tourism industry to adapt to changing international market conditions while maintaining its appeal among travellers worldwide.
According to the latest official figures, the Maldives has welcomed 1,114,751 tourists so far this year. Although arrivals are currently 4.9 per cent lower than during the corresponding period last year, the country continues to attract more than one million international visitors and maintain a strong presence in the global tourism market.
The increase in tourist beds, together with the continued operation of more than 1,300 tourism establishments, positions the Maldives to accommodate future growth in international travel demand. The country’s diversified tourism portfolio, established resort sector and globally recognised island experiences remain important strengths as the Maldives continues to develop its tourism industry and welcome visitors from around the world.
