Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed has held high-level discussions on strengthening counter-terrorism cooperation during his official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, highlighting the Maldives’ continued engagement in international security partnerships and its commitment to regional and global peace.

As part of the visit, Minister Hassan Rasheed met with Major General Abdullah bin Hamed Al-Qurashi, Deputy Military Commander of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC). The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Defence, His Royal Highness Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, reflecting the close relations between the two countries and the importance both sides attach to defence and security cooperation.

During the meeting, the two sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in the field of counter-terrorism, with particular focus on strengthening institutional ties and expanding practical collaboration. Discussions also centred on advancing capacity-building efforts through joint training initiatives, which are expected to support the development of professional expertise, operational readiness and coordinated responses to evolving security challenges.

The talks further addressed the importance of strategic collaboration in responding effectively to emerging regional and global threats. Both sides emphasised that sustained cooperation, knowledge-sharing and coordinated engagement remain essential in confronting modern security risks and safeguarding the wellbeing of nations and communities. Their discussions reflected a common understanding that international partnerships play a vital role in strengthening resilience against terrorism and related threats.

The meeting also underscored the Maldives’ active role in engaging with international partners on issues of security, stability and peace. For the Maldives, cooperation with key partners such as Saudi Arabia continues to support national efforts to build institutional capacity and contribute meaningfully to broader international initiatives aimed at countering extremism and promoting a secure and stable environment.

Minister Hassan Rasheed’s visit highlights the importance of continued dialogue between friendly nations on matters of defence and security. It also reflects the shared vision of the Maldives and Saudi Arabia to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest while contributing to collective efforts that promote peace, stability and security at both regional and global levels.
