President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that the Maldives administration’s foremost priority is to ensure that agreements signed between the Maldives and Sri Lanka are implemented effectively and translated into meaningful benefits for the people of both countries. He made the remarks during a joint press statement issued as part of his ongoing state visit to Sri Lanka, which is being undertaken at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
During his remarks, President Muizzu conveyed sincere appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to him, First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, and the Maldivian delegation. He noted that the visit reflects the close and longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, while also creating renewed momentum for deeper cooperation across areas of shared importance. The President described his discussions with President Dissanayake as extensive and constructive, covering bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international matters of mutual concern.
President Muizzu stated that the understandings and agreements reached during the visit are expected to strengthen collaboration in several key sectors. These include education and training, archives, health, defence, youth empowerment, and sports development. He underscored that the true value of such agreements lies not only in their signing, but in their successful implementation through programmes, institutional cooperation, and initiatives that deliver practical and visible results for citizens. His remarks highlighted a people-centred approach to diplomacy, placing emphasis on outcomes that improve opportunities, capacity, and wellbeing in both nations.
The President also gave particular attention to economic and trade relations, noting that he and President Dissanayake held substantive discussions on ways to further broaden economic engagement. He acknowledged Sri Lanka’s contribution to the development of the Maldives over the years and emphasised the importance of building on that strong foundation through increased investment and broader commercial collaboration. President Muizzu stated that efforts would be intensified to create a more investor-friendly environment and to expand business opportunities in ways that support sustainable growth and mutual prosperity.
In this regard, he highlighted the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum as an important platform for advancing commercial partnerships. The forum is expected to bring together businesses, investors, and producers from both countries, creating space for dialogue, networking, and the identification of new avenues for cooperation. The initiative reflects a broader vision of strengthening private sector linkages and encouraging greater cross-border engagement between the two neighbouring economies. Such collaboration is expected to contribute to innovation, trade diversification, and increased confidence among business communities in both markets.
President Muizzu further stated that the Maldives and Sri Lanka will continue to work closely to support security in the Indian Ocean region, recognising the importance of stability, cooperation, and collective responsibility in maintaining peace and safeguarding shared maritime interests. He also stressed the importance of closer collaboration on climate change mitigation, an area of pressing significance for island and coastal nations. His remarks reflected the growing recognition that regional partnerships are essential in responding to environmental challenges and advancing common resilience goals.
The President also revealed that discussions are underway to establish a branch of the Bank of Maldives in Sri Lanka, a development that could further strengthen financial connectivity and facilitate smoother economic interaction between the two countries. In addition, he noted plans to introduce premium Maldivian fish products to the Sri Lankan market, signalling new opportunities for trade expansion and value creation. These initiatives point to a forward-looking partnership aimed at widening economic engagement while also promoting Maldivian products and services internationally.
President Muizzu’s remarks during the state visit underscored the Maldives’ commitment to a constructive and results-oriented foreign policy, one that prioritises implementation, strengthens bilateral trust, and creates direct value for citizens.
