Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Honourable Dr Harini Amarasuriya, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today, in an engagement that reflected the close and longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. The meeting formed part of the President’s ongoing State Visit to Sri Lanka and highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to further deepen bilateral relations through practical cooperation and sustained diplomatic engagement.
During the discussions, President Dr Muizzu and Prime Minister Dr Amarasuriya reaffirmed their mutual resolve to strengthen ties between the two neighbouring Indian Ocean nations and to advance collaboration across a range of areas of common interest. These included hospitality and tourism, healthcare, education, vocational training, and wider socio-economic development. The exchange underscored the importance both governments place on building partnerships that deliver meaningful benefits to their people while supporting long-term stability, resilience, and prosperity in the region.
The meeting also reflected the broad and multifaceted nature of Maldives–Sri Lanka relations, which have continued to evolve through strong people-to-people connections, institutional cooperation, and shared regional interests. As both countries continue to pursue national development priorities, the reaffirmation of cooperation in sectors such as education, training, and healthcare signals a constructive outlook for future engagement and the creation of new opportunities for knowledge exchange, skills development, and economic partnership.
President Dr Muizzu also commended the efforts of the Sri Lankan government in recovering from the socio-economic challenges that followed the devastating impacts of Cyclone Ditwah last year. His remarks conveyed solidarity with Sri Lanka’s recovery journey and recognised the resilience and determination demonstrated by the country in addressing complex national challenges. The acknowledgement further illustrated the spirit of goodwill and mutual respect that continues to define relations between the two countries.
Both leaders also emphasised the important role played by the Sri Lankan community living in the Maldives in supporting national development, as well as the contributions of the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka to the development of Sri Lanka. Their remarks highlighted the enduring value of these communities as an essential bridge between the two nations, strengthening social, cultural, and economic ties while contributing positively to the lives of both societies.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed are currently undertaking a State Visit to Sri Lanka from 3 to 6 May 2026 at the invitation of the President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency Anura Kumara Disanayaka. The visit reflects the warm and historic relations shared by the Maldives and Sri Lanka and is expected to further reinforce cooperation, mutual understanding, and friendship between the two countries at both governmental and people-to-people levels.
The courtesy call by Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya stands as a notable moment within the State Visit, reflecting the positive momentum in bilateral engagement and the shared aspiration of both countries to expand cooperation in ways that promote inclusive development and regional partnership. For global observers, the meeting offered a strong example of constructive diplomacy between close neighbours committed to collaboration, resilience, and a forward-looking relationship grounded in mutual respect and shared progress.
